Victoria: August, 2009

January 21, 2010 in Adventures

Nearing the end of summer, some members of my family and I made our separate ways to Vancouver Island to visit some friends and see my Great Uncle Gene.  My first day on the island, I checked into the apartment of my friends Chris and Kendra who left me a key while they were in Alberta for a couple months.  They had left a wonderful welcome package for the guests staying at their place during the summer, with directions and reviews for some of their favourite restaurants and cafes.  I took their advice and had brunch at the Blue Fox where I had the best Eggs Benedict that I have had in my life. I then met up with my good friends Luke and Katrina who I had met in California in 2006 and then hiked the West Coast Trail with in 2008.  The following morning we headed up island to meet the rest of my family near Campbell River at my Uncle Gene's house.

It was a pretty interesting walk down the alleyway to the studio space situated on a converted floor of one of Tokyo's love hotels. The experience of walking through the winding corridors of the building past the brightly lit screens of themed rooms to find the front reception was an adventure in itself..

We hiked the 75km trail from Bamfield to Port Renfrew (north to south), bathing in waterfalls, filtering drinking water from streams, singing made up songs (ask us about Ninny-Nat-Nat), sharing stories, eating delicious food (thanks Katrina), witnessing a bear, and bearing witness to some of the most breathtaking scenery that I have ever had the privilege to behold. There were challenges and triumphs along the way, blisters, the most delicious crabs, and the best damn burger you have ever had in your life!

My personal theory is that clever marketing of the Caribbean lifestyle and discount air carriers catering to the jet-setting fish demographic are almost solely responsible for the dramatic rise in lionfish populations.

FUN FACT: Venomous and poisonous are two terms that are often used interchangeably, but there is a subtle difference. Venomous refers to a toxin that is...

The nurse, too, seemed to enjoy the process as a cruel grin and maniacal flash of sadistic pleasure crossed her face as she unapologetically pressed with white-knuckled force on either side of the incisions causing the abscess explode in an eruption of blood and pus. The colours kind of reminded me of the Canadian flag... and home...
